The Perfect Dental Cleaning

At my semi-annual dental appointment recently my dental hygienist made my day. Actually, I made my day, and she confirmed the perfect dental cleaning. She makes the visits seem more like a couple gals catching up on all the latest. Sure, she’s talking much more than I am, but hey, that’s the way it is. We usually end up laughing so much about some crazy topic that time passes quickly.

This particular visit however, I noticed she wasn’t using a dental pick to scrape plaque from my teeth, or so it seemed as the cleaning was going really fast. In fact she was starting the tooth polish rather quickly. I thought I must ask her about it when I get one of those rinse-the-mouth chances.

Knowing I use essential oils she asked me if I was still using them and how they were helping. Before I could reply she added, “You don’t have any plaque to scrape off this time. This is rare, but I have not had to use the pick to scrape plaque off any of your teeth. There is none to scrape.”

“WOW, the perfect dental cleaning. I was just going to ask you if you notice anything different this time because I have been oil pulling and using a homemade tooth powder. I’ve been curious to know if it is helping.”

“Really?!”

“Really. Oh my, this is great. I’m thrilled.” And, I was thrilled because she just confirmed that what I had been doing worked.

“That’s right. The teeth and gums look great. So tell me about what you have been doing?”

What I’ve been doing folks is oil pulling and using a homemade tooth powder for about three months. I stopped using commercial toothpaste as it contains stuff I don’t want in my body. I explained the process to her and what I used.

You can “search” the internet for oil pulling and find thousands of articles about it. There are pro and cons but the pros far out-weigh any cons as far as I’m concerned. Sesame seed oil is another oil frequently used for this, but the healing properties of coconut oil far out-weigh any other oil. So what did I do? I add essential oils to boost the effectiveness.

oil pulling mixtureFirst, I made up a batch of oil pulling coconut oil mixture. I use organic coconut oil (my favorite Tropical Traditions), adding Spark Naturals Melaleuca (Tea Tree) and Shield Blend essential oils. That’s it. That’s all the ingredients you need. Add whatever essential oils you feel would be appropriate for yourself.

Swish about 1 to 2 Tablespoons of the oil mixture around in your mouth for about 20 minutes, really working the oil between your teeth. Do this before brushing your teeth in the morning. It may take a while to get used to this swishing oil, but keep at it.

Don’t swallow as the coconut oil absorbs the bacteria and toxins that gather in your mouth pulling them into the coconut oil so you don’t want to ingest it.

When the 20 minutes is up spit the mixture into a cup or tissue and toss in the trash. Don’t pour it down the drain as the coconut oil could possibly cause clogging pipes eventually.

The Melaleuca helps the immune system acting as a stimulant helping the body fight off disease, bacteria, infection, virus and illness. A very popular essential oil.

Shield Blend is a natural sanitizer to help protect against germs. It’s a combination of Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Lemon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils.

Oil Pulling Blend

A mixture to clean and detox the mouth.

Ingredients

(Easily double the amount of ingredients if using a larger jar.)

Directions

  1. Whisk coconut oil and essential oils together until well blended. Add to a 4 oz. mason jar or container of your choice (essential oils can leach petrochemicals from plastic so a glass container is preferred).
  2. Once a day, before brushing your teeth, put about one tablespoon of the oil pulling mixture in your mouth and swish for 20 minutes. (Easy to do while in the shower.) Do not swallow! The oil will be full of bacteria and other nasty debris so just spit it in the trash at the end of your 20 minutes. Don’t spit it in your sink as the oil could eventually clog your drains.
  3. Brush your teeth and feel the difference! Your teeth will feel smooth and clean every time. And your dental appointment will be a breeze.

tooth powderThe Tooth Powder is a mixture of baking soda with Melaleuca and Peppermint essential oils mixed in. Dip the head of your toothbrush (regular or electronic) in the tooth powder and use instead of toxic commercial toothpaste which has sodium fluoride, dyes made of crude oil, sodium sulfates and more…just look it up. Heck, read the label on your toothpaste. ”…is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.” is what it says. If ingested it could kill you.

I found this interesting article on the internet about the hidden dangers of toothpaste by Scott Baker that you might find interesting.

For me, it was simple, and now I know it’s effective. A better way for healthier, cleaner teeth and mouth using simple ingredients and essential oils.
